In the thrilling world of cryptocurrencies, where fortunes are made overnight and innovation is the name of the game, a dark underbelly has emerged. Fake cryptocurrency sites are sprouting like digital mushrooms, trapping unsuspecting individuals into scams, and leaving them high and dry. Now we see a recent bogus reward scheme circulating, operating as a deadly cryptocurrency trap. What exactly do they look like?
The Web of Deception
Picture this. You stumble upon an enticing website promising quick riches in the world of cryptocurrency. Operating undetected, this current scam has leveraged a heft constellation of over 1000 fraudulent websites and has likely resulted in thousands of individuals becoming victims worldwide.
“The scam works via an advanced fee fraud that involves tricking victims into believing that they’ve won a certain amount of cryptocurrency. However, to get their rewards, the victims would need to pay a small amount to open an account on their website”

How Do They Operate?
Firstly, scammers create a chain of direct messages, often originating from Twitter to lure victims into visiting the bogus sites. Embedded in the messages is the urgency to create an account on the fake website and apply a promo code. Majority of the time the code specifies the chance to win a cryptocurrency reward. Some state it amounts to 0.78632 bitcoin which equates to around $20,300.
However, once the account is made, clueless victims are requested to make a ‘small’ deposit in order to activate their account. In theory, they are told this will confirm their identity and allow them to complete the withdrawal. Unfortunately, between December 2022 and March 2023, the illicit transactions have yielded a little over $5 million.
Protecting Yourself
While these scams are undoubtedly alarming, there are measures you can take to protect yourself and avoid falling into the traps laid by these digital predators.
- Conduct Thorough Research: Before engaging with any crypto platform, always research. Look for credible reviews, and user experience and check for regulatory compliance.
- Verify the Authenticity: Scrutinise the website’s domain and security features. Be wary of slight variations in domain names or unusual payment methods
- Stay informed: Keep ahead of the latest scams and trends in the crypto world. Follow reputable news sources and engage in communities where crypto enthusiasts discuss potential scams and share warnings.
